Background:

  • Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is a common procedure for coronary artery disease.
  • Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is a known complication of PCI, potentially impacting patient outcomes.
  • Quality of life (QoL) is an important patient-centered outcome measure following medical interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of CIN on QoL in patients undergoing PCI in Pakistan.
  • To identify predictors of diminished QoL in patients who develop CIN post-PCI.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective cohort study of 5325 patients undergoing PCI.
  • Patients divided into CIN (n=1250) and non-CIN (n=4075) groups.
  • QoL assessed pre- and post-PCI using a standardized questionnaire; statistical analyses performed.

  • CIN patients showed significantly lower post-PCI QoL across all domains (p < 0.05).
  • CIN, older age, diabetes, lack of hydration, prolonged hospital stay, and lower baseline QoL predicted poorer outcomes.

Conclusions:

  • CIN has a detrimental effect on QoL after PCI, especially in high-risk individuals.
  • Preventive strategies and early interventions are vital to mitigate CIN complications and enhance patient-centered outcomes.
  • Further prospective, multi-center research is recommended.
