Factors Affecting Drug Response: Overview01:21

Factors Affecting Drug Response: Overview

3.1K
When it comes to infants and young children, they are typically administered smaller doses of medication in comparison to adults. This is primarily because their organ functions still need to fully develop, meaning their bodies are not as efficient at metabolizing or eliminating drugs. Additionally, their blood-brain barrier is more permeable than in adults. As a result, high concentrations of drugs can easily penetrate the central nervous system (CNS), potentially leading to neurological...

Global Climate Change01:50

Global Climate Change

29.0K
Throughout its ~4.5 billion year history, the Earth has experienced periods of warming and cooling. However, the current drastic increase in global temperatures is well outside of the Earth’s cyclic norms, and evidence for human-caused global climate change is compelling. Paleoclimatology, the study of ancient climate conditions, provides ample evidence for human-caused global climate change by comparing recent conditions with those in the past.

Inhaled Medications01:23

Inhaled Medications

818
Inhaled medications are crucial for managing chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma. They are essential for effective treatment and control, ensuring optimal respiratory health and well-being. Inhaled medication delivers drugs directly to the lungs, providing a rapid onset of action and reducing systemic side effects compared to oral or injectable medications. Three primary types of inhalation devices are used to administer these medications: nebulizers, metered-dose inhalers...

Le Chatelier's Principle: Changing Concentration02:27

Le Chatelier's Principle: Changing Concentration

66.1K
A system at equilibrium is in a state of dynamic balance, with forward and reverse reactions taking place at equal rates. If an equilibrium system is subjected to a change in conditions that affects these reaction rates differently (a stress), then the rates are no longer equal and the system is not at equilibrium. The system will subsequently experience a net reaction in the direction of a greater rate (a shift) that will re-establish the equilibrium. This phenomenon is summarized by Le...

Primary Healthcare Services01:30

Primary Healthcare Services

2.2K
Primary care promotes wellness and prevents disease. This care includes health promotion, education, protection (such as immunizations), early disease screening, and environmental considerations. Settings providing this type of healthcare include physician offices, public health clinics, school nursing, and community health nursing.
In 1978, international leaders convened in Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan, for what would be a pivotal event in global health. The Alma-Ata Declaration was the first to call...

Summary

Amphetamine injections at supervised injecting centres have significantly increased, particularly among frequent attendees. This shift did not correlate with increased disruptive behaviour or overdose risk for those using both amphetamines and opioids.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Drug Use Studies
  • Harm Reduction

Background:

  • Medically Supervised Injecting Centres (MSICs) offer a safe environment for drug consumption.
  • Investigated injecting patterns and their impact on overdose risk and client behavior at Sydney's MSIC.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze trends in drug injection patterns over time.
  • To assess the relationship between injecting patterns, overdose risk, and client behavior.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from May 2001 to December 2024 from the Uniting MSIC in Sydney.
  • Tracked visit-specific drug use (amphetamines, opioids), overdoses, and behavioral sanctions.
  • Aggregated data into annual summaries and categorized drug visits.

Main Results:

  • Amphetamine injections rose from 2-7% (2002-2011) to 50.1% (2024).
  • Exclusive amphetamine injection increased from 8.9% (2001) to 43.9% (2024).
  • Combined amphetamine-opioid injection rose from 5.6% (2001) to 33.2% (2024), with lower overdose risk compared to exclusive opioid use.
  • Challenging behaviors were not linked to amphetamine injection.

Conclusions:

  • Significant increase in amphetamine injection at MSIC, with frequent users more likely to inject both amphetamines and opioids.
  • No corresponding rise in disruptive behavior observed.
  • Strategies for opportunistic interventions are recommended.
