Quality Control01:05

Quality Control

2.9K
Quality control is one of the three cyclical quality assurance activities that help keep a system under statistical control. Typical quality control activities include creating quality control charts, conducting proficiency testing, and documenting and archiving results.
Quality control helps track data, visualize trends, and identify variations, making it easier to detect deviations that may affect the accuracy of an analysis. One way to do this is by generating a quality control chart, which...

Vasectomy is a surgical form of male sterilization that involves severing and sealing the vasa deferentia, preventing sperm from mixing with semen during ejaculation. Because a vasectomy does not impact the testes' ability to produce testosterone, hormone levels, libido, and sexual function generally remain unchanged. While vasectomy is highly effective in preventing pregnancy, with a success rate near 99.85%, rare cases of recanalization (spontaneous reconnection) can occur. Although...

Nursing Implementation

6.2K
Implementation is the execution of the nursing care plan developed during the planning phase.
The five steps to implementing effective nursing care include reassessing the patient, reviewing and revising the existing nursing care plan, organizing the resources and care delivery, anticipating and preventing complications, and implementing nursing interventions.

Methods for Controlling Microbial Growth01:29

Methods for Controlling Microbial Growth

1.7K
Microbial growth control refers to various methods employed to inhibit, reduce, or eliminate microorganisms to ensure safety and hygiene across different settings. These methods are categorized based on the target environment and the level of microbial control required.Biocides are versatile agents designed to control microorganisms by either inhibiting their growth or outright killing them. These agents work through various physical, chemical, mechanical, or biological mechanisms. The...

Glucose Homeostasis: Regulation of Blood Glucose

4.4K
Carbohydrates consumed through foods are converted into glucose, a crucial energy source for the body. In the prandial state, high blood glucose levels stimulate the secretion of insulin from the pancreas. Insulin inhibits hepatic glucose production and stimulates glucose uptake and metabolism by muscle and adipose tissue. The excess glucose is converted into glycogen and stored in the liver and muscles.
During fasting, when blood glucose levels are low, the pancreas secretes glucagon. it...

Biological Methods for Microbial Control

Biological agents offer an effective means of controlling microbial growth by leveraging natural processes like predation, competition, and the secretion of antimicrobial substances.Predatory bacteria such as Bdellovibrio species target and kill pathogens like Salmonella and E. coli. They are widely used in poultry farms to control infections. Myxococcus species help combat plant-pathogenic fungi. These naturally occurring predators serve as eco-friendly alternatives to chemical pesticides and...

Area of Science:

  • Transfusion Medicine
  • Blood Banking Quality Control

Background:

  • The European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines & HealthCare (EDQM) recommends glucose measurement over pH for quality control of platelet concentrates (PCs).
  • Validated, simple glucose measurement methods for blood establishment (BE) laboratories are currently lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility of using a point-of-care (POC) glucometer for glucose determination in PCs stored in platelet additive solutions (PAS-E).

Main Methods:

  • Thirty PAS-E-stored PCs were analyzed on storage days 2 and 6.
  • Glucose levels were measured using a POC glucometer (Accu-Chek Instant®) and compared with a reference autoanalyzer (AU5800, Beckman Coulter®).
  • Statistical methods included paired testing, categorical analysis at low concentrations, and correlation analysis.

Main Results:

  • Glucose measurements by the POC glucometer and autoanalyzer showed comparable results on day 6 (p=0.415).
  • A strong linear association was observed between the methods (r=0.988; p<0.001).
  • Classification of samples below the 10 mg/dL threshold did not differ significantly between the two methods.

Conclusions:

  • A POC glucometer offers reliable and comparable glucose measurements in PAS-E PCs versus a standard autoanalyzer.
  • This rapid, cost-effective method supports the EDQM recommendation and can improve QC efficiency in BE laboratories.
