Background:
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a powerful antioxidant and the main cause of kidney problems caused by cisplatin consumption is due to the low power of antioxidants. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of CoQ10 supplementation on cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in patients undergoing chemotherapy as a double-blind clinical trial.
Materials And Methods:
In this randomized clinical trial, cancer patients referred to the educational hospital of Shahrekord were divided randomly into two groups. The patients received ubiquinone 300 mg daily during the 8 weeks. Fasting blood samples were collected for testing before and after intervention. Data were analyzed by SPSS software version 21 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA) using descriptive and analytic tests.
Results:
The mean of blood urea nitrogen (BUN), blood creatinine (Cr), and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) did not show a significant difference between the two groups before and after the intervention. The mean difference within the Cr group showed the mean stages before and after the intervention increased significantly and the GFR had a significant decrease (P < 0.05). However, the mean of within-group BUN showed no significant difference.
Conclusion:
The mean of BUN, blood creatinine, and GFR were not different between the two groups, before and after the intervention. The average creatinine levels increased after intervention between the mean of pre-intervention and post-intervention stages increased and GFR decreased; however, in the case of BUN, the opposite was not the case. This study's results can be used as a guide in drug administration for patients undergoing chemotherapy to reduce the renal side effects of prescribed drugs.
