Personalized text message advisors significantly increased physical activity (PA) in older Latino adults. Non-personalized and choice-of-sex messaging showed the greatest moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) gains over 12 months.

  • To compare the effectiveness of three SMS-based PA advisor personalization strategies.
  • To promote physical activity among insufficiently active midlife and older Latino adults.
  • To identify optimal digital messaging approaches for diverse populations.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized experimental study-within-a-trial (SWAT) design.
  • 141 participants received SMS-based PA coaching.
  • Randomization to Non-Personalized, Sex-Matched, or Choice-of-Sex advisor conditions.
  • 12-month assessment of PA using the CHAMPS instrument.

  • All SMS conditions significantly increased PA over 12 months.
  • Non-Personalized and Choice-of-Sex advisors yielded greater MVPA increases than Sex-Matched.

  • For women, only the Non-Personalized condition showed significantly greater MVPA increases than Sex-Matched.

Conclusions:

  • Non-Personalized and Choice-of-Sex SMS advisors are effective for increasing MVPA in this population.
  • Tailoring digital messaging to participant preferences can enhance intervention effectiveness.
  • Findings support the scalability of digital PA interventions for under-resourced communities.
