Federal Nutrition Assistance Programs (FNAPs) show a complex relationship with child weight outcomes. Evidence does not support broad adverse effects, and policy changes may improve health.

Concurrent increases in US food insecurity and pediatric obesity raise questions about nutrition assistance programs.
Federal Nutrition Assistance Programs (FNAPs) are central to food security for many US children.

Conclusions:

A complex, non-causal association exists between FNAP participation and pediatric weight, varying by population, program, and study design.
Evidence does not support widespread negative weight effects from FNAPs.
Strengthened nutrition standards in policies may promote healthier child weight outcomes.
