Abstract:
Amiodarone is among the most effective antiarrhythmic drugs and it is frequently used in the management of both supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias, particularly in patients with impaired cardiac function. Due to its high iodine content, amiodarone therapy is associated with multiple adverse effects, most notably on thyroid function. One of the most significant endocrine complications is amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis. Two main subtypes have been identified - Type 1 and Type 2 - along with mixed forms, whose diagnosis may be challenging but remains essential, as therapeutic strategies vary significantly according to the underlying pathophysiology. Through the presentation of a clinical case, this article examines the different forms of amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis, their clinical manifestations, the diagnostic workup required to distinguish them, and the appropriate management strategies.
