Adaptive Mechanisms in Cancer Cells02:53

Adaptive Mechanisms in Cancer Cells

7.2K
Cancer cells accumulate genetic changes at an abnormally rapid rate due to the defects in the DNA repair mechanisms. From an evolutionary perspective, such genetic instability is advantageous for cancer development. Mutant cell lines accumulate a series of beneficial mutations that contribute to their progression into cancer.
Some of the advantages that cancer cells have on normal cells include - enhanced ability to divide without terminally differentiating, induce new blood vessel formation,...

Confirmation Biases01:31

Confirmation Biases

8.3K
The confirmation bias is the tendency to focus on information that confirms our existing beliefs and ignore information that is inconsistent with our expectations. For example, if you think that your professor is not very nice, you notice all of the instances of rude behavior exhibited by the professor while ignoring the countless pleasant interactions he is involved in on a daily basis. Have you ever fallen prey to the confirmation bias, either as the source or target of such bias?

Hindsight Biases01:12

Hindsight Biases

4.3K
Hindsight bias leads you to believe that the event you just experienced was predictable, even though it really wasn’t. In other words, you knew all along that things would turn out the way they did. Can you relate this to the phrase "Hindsight is 20/20" now?

Bias01:22

Bias

7.4K
Bias refers to any tendency that prevents a question from being considered unprejudiced. In research, bias occurs when one outcome or answer is selected or encouraged over others in sampling or testing. Bias can occur during any research phase, including study design, data collection, analysis, and publication.
In statistics, a sampling bias is created when a sample is collected from a population, and some members of the population are not as likely to be chosen as others (remember, each member...

Subliminal Perception01:15

Subliminal Perception

812
Subliminal perception refers to the processing of sensory information that occurs below the level of conscious awareness. Researchers study subliminal perception by presenting a stimulus, such as a word or image, very quickly, typically around 50 milliseconds. This rapid presentation is often followed by another stimulus, such as a pattern of dots or lines, which blocks further mental processing of the initial stimulus. As a result, if participants cannot identify the initial stimulus better...

Factors Affecting Perception01:25

Factors Affecting Perception

2.8K
Perception is influenced by perceptual set, context, motivation, and emotion. Perceptual set, or perceptual expectancy, refers to the tendency to perceive things in a particular way, influenced by previous experiences and expectations. This phenomenon affects the interpretation of stimuli, creating a set of mental tendencies and assumptions that impact sensory perceptions of sound, taste, touch, and sight.
An illustrative example of a perceptual set is the scenario where an airline pilot told...

Summary

Repulsive serial bias in perception is not solely due to low-level adaptation. This study suggests that decisional processes, not adaptation, drive this bias in continuous estimation tasks.

Area of Science:

  • Cognitive Psychology
  • Perception Science

Background:

  • Perceptual biases can shift away from prior stimuli.
  • Previous theories attribute this repulsive serial bias to low-level adaptation during stimulus encoding.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To differentiate the mechanisms underlying repulsive serial bias from adaptation-driven biases.
  • To investigate the role of adaptation versus post-perceptual processes in repulsive serial bias.

Main Methods:

  • Compared repulsive serial bias (common location delayed estimation task) with adaptation-driven bias (location estimation task with inducer).
  • Analyzed correlations between biases, response time effects, and mouse-tracking data.

Main Results:

  • Repulsive serial bias and adaptation-driven bias were not correlated.
  • Repulsive serial bias, but not adaptation-driven bias, showed response time effects.
  • Mouse-tracking data for repulsive serial bias indicated dynamic repulsion not explained by adaptation alone.

Conclusions:

  • Repulsive serial bias in continuous estimation tasks involves post-perceptual decisional processes.
  • These decisional processes are distinct from the adaptation mechanisms driving other perceptual biases.
