Abstract:
Currently, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) with high toxicity and low biodegradability in soil and water were the serious issue towards environment and human beings. Among various remediation methods, electrochemical remediation emerged as a promising approach to degrade POPs in soil and water. To begin with, the working mechanism of electrochemical remediation for POPs was reviewed, which mainly included the physical process, electrokinetic, electrochemical oxidation, electrochemical reduction and electrocoagulation. Then, this review also briefly summarized the classification, toxicity effects, and environmental sources of POPs in soil and water. Moreover, taking per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), polychlorinated/polybrominated organic hydrocarbons (POHs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) as typical examples, the recent advance of electrochemical remediation technologies was comprehensively reviewed. To further improve the efficiency of POPs degradation, the electrochemical remediation coupled with other remediation technologies was also highlighted. Finally, the challenges and perspectives toward electrochemical remediation for POPs degradation were also proposed. This review not only provided a summary of recent progress but also paved relevant research directions in the field of electrochemical remediation to degrade POPs.

What is an Electrochemical Gradient?
The chemical gradient relies on differences in the abundance of a substance on the outside versus the inside of a cell and flows from areas of high to low ion concentration. In contrast, the electrical gradient revolves around an...

States of Water
Water freezes when the intermolecular forces are greater than the kinetic energy. Unlike most other substances, water is less dense in its solid state than in its liquid state. This is because each water molecule can form...
