Self-Awareness and Its Effects01:21

Self-Awareness and Its Effects

318
Self-awareness is a psychological state in which the individual becomes the focal point of their attention. This inward focus transforms the self into an object of contemplation and assessment, influencing how individuals perceive their actions and their alignment with personal and societal standards.Triggers and Contexts for Self-AwarenessSelf-awareness can be activated by external stimuli that make individuals visually or audibly aware of themselves, such as mirrors, cameras, or recordings.

Altered States of Awareness01:06

Altered States of Awareness

1.2K
Altered states of consciousness represent significant deviations from one's normal mental state. These deviations can range from subtle changes in awareness to profound transformations in perception, thought processes, and sensory experiences. Altered states of consciousness can be triggered by various factors, including drug use, meditation, hypnosis, illness, or even intense fatigue.
The ingestion of substances like stimulants or hallucinogens leads to chemical alterations in the brain...

Subconsciousness and No Awareness

727
The concept of subconscious awareness refers to the processing of information below the level of conscious thought, which significantly influences both behaviors and decisions. It is also known as waking subconscious awareness. This complex level of cognition operates without the direct awareness of the individual, facilitating rapid and simultaneous handling of multiple information streams.
An illustrative example of subconscious processing is its role in problem-solving. Often, individuals...

High-Level and Low-Level Awareness

792
Controlled processes in human consciousness represent high-alert mental states where individuals deliberately focus their attention on achieving specific goals. Controlled processes can be seen in situations like mastering new technology, where a person might become so absorbed that they ignore surrounding distractions. Such processes involve selective attention, requiring one to concentrate on particular elements of experience while disregarding others. These are governed by executive...

Understanding the Self01:28

Understanding the Self

334
The self is a central aspect of human identity, encompassing an individual’s beliefs, emotions, perceptions, and experiences. It is a cognitive and psychological construct that enables individuals to interpret their traits and behaviors, influencing how they perceive themselves and interact with the world. While personality consists of stable and enduring characteristics, the self is shaped by self-perception and social experiences. This distinction highlights the dynamic nature of the...

Understanding Self-Concept

314
The self-concept encompasses individuals' beliefs about themselves, structured through cognitive frameworks known as self-schemas. These schemas function as mental representations of specific traits or behaviors, influencing how self-relevant information is perceived, processed, and remembered. For example, individuals who are schematic for body weight are more likely to interpret routine experiences—such as dining out or shopping—through the lens of that trait. Conversely, those...

Summary

Palliative care awareness increased nationwide from 2018-2024, but understanding declined, particularly among minority groups. This highlights a need for better public education on palliative care.

Area of Science:

  • Health Services Research
  • Public Health
  • Gerontology

Background:

  • Palliative care has seen significant expansion in the U.S. healthcare system over the last decade.
  • However, population-level trends in public awareness and understanding of palliative care remain under-researched.
  • Recent data on these trends, especially across diverse demographic groups, are crucial for informing public health strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze trends in palliative care awareness and understanding in the U.S. population.
  • To examine how these trends differ across various racial and ethnic groups between 2018 and 2024.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized two waves of the Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS) data (2018 and 2024).
  • Included a large sample size (2,793 in 2018, 6,016 in 2024).
  • Employed multivariable logistic regression and interaction terms to assess sociodemographic associations and temporal trends across racial/ethnic groups.

Main Results:

  • Palliative care awareness significantly increased from 29% to 51% across all groups between 2018 and 2024.
  • Non-Hispanic White participants reported the highest awareness levels (33% to 53%).
  • Conversely, understanding of palliative care decreased overall (72% to 55%), with the most substantial decline among non-Hispanic Black individuals (75% to 48%).

Conclusions:

  • Findings indicate a rise in public awareness but a concurrent increase in confusion regarding palliative care.
  • Disparities in understanding trends were observed, with minority groups experiencing steeper declines.
  • There is an urgent need for enhanced, culturally sensitive public education initiatives to improve palliative care comprehension.
