Adding Delay Alternating with Nutation for Tailored Excitation (DANTE) preparation to deep learning-accelerated intracranial vessel wall imaging (IC-VWI) reduced artifacts and improved lumen visualization. However, this enhancement came with a slight decrease in vessel wall depiction.
Area of Science:
- Medical Imaging
- Neuroradiology
- Cardiovascular Imaging
Background:
- Intracranial vessel wall imaging (IC-VWI) is crucial for diagnosing cerebrovascular diseases.
- Deep learning (DL) acceleration improves IC-VWI efficiency.
- Optimizing contrast enhancement and artifact reduction in IC-VWI remains a challenge.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess the feasibility and performance of incorporating Delay Alternating with Nutation for Tailored Excitation (DANTE) preparation into a DL-accelerated post-contrast T1-SPACE sequence for IC-VWI.
- To evaluate the impact of DANTE preparation on lumen and wall visualization and venous flow artifacts.
Main Methods:
- Retrospective analysis of 35 patients undergoing IC-VWI with and without DANTE preparation.
- Comparison of DL-T1-SPACE with DANTE (T1-SPACEDL+DANTE) versus DL-T1-SPACE (T1-SPACEDL).
- Neuroradiologist scoring of lumen/wall visualization and venous flow artifacts; statistical analysis using CLMMs and Wilcoxon tests.
Main Results:
- T1-SPACEDL+DANTE significantly improved lumen visualization (pooled OR 40.02) compared to T1-SPACEDL.
- T1-SPACEDL+DANTE reduced vessel wall visualization (pooled OR 0.11).
- Venous flow artifacts were significantly reduced across all analyzed venous subsites with DANTE preparation (p<0.001).
Conclusions:
- Integrating DANTE preparation into DL-accelerated IC-VWI enhances lumen depiction and reduces artifacts.
- The technique shows promise for improved assessment of intracranial vasculopathies and aneurysms.
- A minor reduction in wall visualization is an expected trade-off for flow suppression.

Avoidance Learning and Learned Helplessness
Avoidance learning occurs when an organism learns that a specific behavior can prevent an unpleasant outcome. For example, a student who receives a bad grade may start studying harder to avoid future poor grades. This behavior persists even when the negative outcome is no longer present. Avoidance learning is powerful because it maintains behavior in the absence of the...
