Comparison of polyvinylidene fluoride and poly(methyl methacrylate) haptics used in the modified Yamane technique

Purpose:
To compare the efficacy and safety of 2 different intraocular lenses (IOLs) used in the modified Yamane technique: one with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) haptics (AcrySof MA60AC) and the other with polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) haptics (Eyecril Plus).
Setting:
Yozgat City Hospital, Yozgat, Turkey.
Design:
Retrospective study.
Methods:
This study was conducted on 60 participants (Group A [n = 32], AcrySof MA60AC; Group E [n = 28], Eyecril Plus). Demographic data, preoperative findings, and postoperative month 6 visual acuity, refraction values, and operative time were recorded for all participants. Intraoperative, early, and late postoperative complications of both groups were compared.
Results:
No significant differences were observed between the 2 groups in demographic data, surgical indications, operative time, axial length, or IOL power ( P > .05). Although a significant improvement was observed from preoperative to postoperative visual acuity in both groups, no significant differences were detected between the groups in visual acuity, refraction values, or intraocular pressure measurements ( P < .001, P > .05). In the analysis of complications, haptic damage was observed intraoperatively in 3 cases in Group A, whereas no haptic damage occurred in Group E; however, the difference was not statistically significant ( P = .09). The most frequently observed complication in both groups was cystoid macular edema (Group A, n = 4; Group E, n = 3), and no significant differences were found between the groups regarding early and late postoperative complications ( P > .05).
Conclusions:
To the authors' knowledge, this is the first study comparing the efficacy and safety of PMMA-haptic and PVDF-haptic IOLs in the modified Yamane technique. Although PVDF haptics are known to provide more reliable surgery due to their flexibility and resistance characteristics, surgery using PMMA haptics seems to have comparable efficacy and safety. Nevertheless, for surgeons performing this technique for the first time, we recommend beginning with IOLs designed with PVDF haptics due to the possibility of intraoperative haptic damage.
