Insights
Pediatricians are crucial for preparing children and families for anesthesia and surgery. This report updates guidelines on their role in ensuring optimal medical readiness and emotional preparedness for the perioperative process.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric medicine
- Surgical preparation
Background:
- Pediatricians are essential in preparing patients and families for anesthesia and surgery.
- Key concerns include optimizing the patient's medical condition and ensuring emotional and cognitive readiness.
- Logistical aspects, including communication and prerequisites for safe perioperative passage, are also vital.
Purpose of the Study:
- To provide updated recommendations for pediatricians regarding the perioperative preparation of patients.
- To emphasize the pediatrician's role in addressing medical, emotional, and logistical aspects of surgical preparation.
Main Methods:
- This report is a revision of previous recommendations.
- It synthesizes current best practices for pediatric perioperative preparation.
Main Results:
- Pediatricians address two primary areas: medical/emotional/cognitive preparation and logistical facilitation.
- Effective preparation ensures patients are medically optimized and families are ready for surgery.
- Streamlined communication and prerequisites are necessary for safe perioperative care.
Conclusions:
- The pediatrician's role in perioperative preparation is multifaceted, encompassing medical, psychological, and logistical support.
- Updated recommendations aim to enhance the safety and experience of pediatric patients undergoing surgery.
- This guidance supports pediatricians in optimizing patient and family readiness for surgical procedures.
Abstract:
Pediatricians play a key role in preparing patients and families for anesthesia and surgery by primarily addressing 2 major areas of concern. The first involves preparation and ensures that the patient is in optimal medical condition for surgery and that the patient and family are emotionally and cognitively ready for surgery. The second category concerns logistics and addresses the necessary communication and prerequisites to enable safe passage through the perioperative process. This revised report updates the recommendations for the pediatrician's role in the perioperative preparation of patients.
