Where does awe lead self? Explanation of the source behind the positive significance of awe
1Department of Psychology, Fudan University, Shanghai, People's Republic of China.
Abstract:
In recent years, high-quality cross-cultural and multimethod research has revealed the positive significance of the emotion of awe. However, there is still controversy over the kind of self-transformation from which the positive significance of awe actually stems. According to a review of empirical research on awe, this article proposes the theory of self-transformation characteristics based on the analysis of seven concepts: self-diminishment, vastness relative to the self, self-size, self-perspective, quiet ego, global self-continuity, and self-transcendence. The theory emphasises understanding the essence and unique positive effects of different self-transformation forms triggered by awe based on four characteristics: perception of the relationship between oneself and the external world, change in self-concern, state of psychological maturity and self-development, and holistic self-constructive thinking style. This provides an integrated theoretical framework that explains the positive impact of awe. It also offers valuable insights and directions for research in other self-related domains. In addition, this article also provides a preliminary discussion on factors that may influence the direction of self-transformation and puts forward the prospects for future research. Finally, this article calls for interdisciplinary researchers to participate in awe research and promote the practical application of awe's positive significance.
