Abstract:
The challenges of delivering therapeutic agents to the central nervous system (CNS) have spurred interest in exosomes as versatile drug delivery vehicles. These small vesicles, derived from various cells, possess unique attributes such as low immunogenicity and the ability to traverse the blood-brain barrier, making them promising tools for CNS-targeted therapies. This review provides an overview of recent progress in using exosomes for drug delivery in the treatment of neurological disorders. It will also assess administration routes, methods of drug loading, and modifications designed to enhance specificity for the CNS. Our study also addresses existing challenges and future directions for clinical implementation, underscoring the dual role of exosomes as therapeutic carriers and diagnostic biomarkers for neurological diseases.
