Abstract:
The well-defined and tunable structure of the intermetallic compounds (IMCs) has been extensively explored in various important heterogeneous catalysis and energy conversions in recent years. Nevertheless, the formation of an ordered structure typically requires high-temperature treatment to overcome kinetic barriers for atomic migration, which inevitably results in serious agglomeration and sintering of the nanoparticles. Therefore, it is critical to develop synthetic principles and strategies to suppress the aggregation of the IMCs, especially for noble metal catalysts, which can greatly improve metal atom utilization. In this review, we concentrate specifically on summarizing the synthetic protocols of small-sized IMCs and their catalytic performance for the selective hydrogenation of various unsaturated function groups. First, several typical preparation methods for small-sized IMCs are introduced. Subsequently, the application of IMCs in the selective hydrogenation of unsaturated functional groups in small organic molecules is discussed in detail. Finally, we highlight challenges encountered in understanding the synthetic processes, applications, and mechanistic insights of small-sized intermetallic compounds.

Reduction of Alkenes: Asymmetric Catalytic Hydrogenation
The metal catalyst used can be either heterogeneous or homogeneous. When hydrogenation of an alkene generates a chiral center, a pair of enantiomeric products is expected to form. However, an enantiomeric excess of one of the products can be facilitated using an enantioselective reaction or an...
Reduction of Alkenes: Catalytic Hydrogenation
Metals like palladium, platinum, and nickel are commonly used in their solid forms — fine powder on an inert surface. As these catalysts remain insoluble in the reaction mixture, they are referred to as heterogeneous catalysts.
The hydrogenation process takes place on the...
Reduction of Alkynes to cis-Alkenes: Catalytic Hydrogenation
Like alkenes, alkynes can be reduced to alkanes in the presence of transition metal catalysts such as Pt, Pd, or Ni. The reaction involves two sequential syn additions of hydrogen via a cis-alkene intermediate.
Radical Substitution: Hydrogenolysis of Alkyl Halides with Tributyltin Hydride
The bonds formed in this reaction are stronger than the bonds broken, making it energetically favorable. The reaction follows a radical chain mechanism similar to radical halogenation reactions,...
