Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantitatively evaluate the immediate effects of PDS plates on auricular cartilage curvature.
  • To compare PDS plate efficacy against horizontal mattress sutures in an animal model.

Main Methods:

  • Fourteen New Zealand rabbits underwent unilateral ear procedures: horizontal mattress suture or PDS plate placement.
  • Standardized photographs captured pre- and post-operative ear shapes.
  • Quantitative analysis included radius of curvature (ROC), first-order derivative (FOD), and second-order derivative (SOD).

Main Results:

  • PDS plates significantly increased the radius of curvature (mean change from 10.91 mm to 36.79 mm) compared to mattress sutures (mean change from 10.80 mm to 17.68 mm).
  • PDS plates achieved a greater reduction in both first-order (0.245 to 0.082) and second-order (0.006 to 0.002) derivatives than mattress sutures.
  • All quantitative measures indicated superior curvature control with PDS plates.

Conclusions:

  • PDS plates demonstrate superior efficacy in controlling auricular cartilage curvature compared to horizontal mattress sutures in this animal model.
  • This finding suggests PDS plates may offer an advantageous alternative for cartilage reshaping procedures in plastic surgery.
