The quagmire of alcohol normalization in Nepal: urgent call for a unified alcohol control act
1School of Public Health and Community Medicine, BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan, Nepal.
Abstract:
Alcohol consumption in Nepal is increasingly normalized despite its substantial health harms. This commentary critically examines how Nepal's fragmented regulation, weak enforcement, expanding unrecorded alcohol use, and growing commercial influence have undermined effective control. Drawing on national evidence, behavioral theory, and international experience, it argues that reduction requires enforcement mechanisms integrated with sustained behavior-change interventions, rather than regulation alone. Nepal therefore urgently requires a unified alcohol control bill aligned with country's federal and sociocultural context.

Protection
It defines a protecting group as the masking agent to make the more reactive species inert to a given set of conditions. This concept is depicted via the illustration of liquid flow through different outlets in an assembly of pipes. The analogy helps to understand the role...

Alcohols from Carbonyl Compounds: Reduction
Catalytic hydrogenation is similar to the reduction of an alkene or alkyne by adding H2 across the pi bond in the presence of transition metal catalysts like Raney Ni, Pd–C, Pt, or Ru. Aldehydes and ketones can be reduced by this method, often under mild to moderate heat (25–100°C) and...

Structure and Nomenclature of Alcohols and Phenols
Alcohols are one of the most important functional groups in organic chemistry. The name of alcohol comes from the hydrocarbon from which it is derived. Alcohols are organic molecules containing the functional hydroxyl or –OH group directly bonded to carbon. Phenols have an OH group directly attached to a benzene ring. While alcohols are colorless, phenol is a white crystalline compound with a characteristic "hospital smell" odor.
As with other organic compounds, alcohols and...
