Metastasis02:30

Metastasis

Metastasis is the spread of cancer cells from the original site to distant locations in the body. Cancer cells can spread via blood vessels (hematogenous) as well as lymph vessels in the body.
Epithelial-to-Mesenchymal Transition
The epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition or EMT is a developmental process commonly observed in wound healing, embryogenesis, and cancer metastasis. EMT is induced by transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) or receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) ligands, which further...
Atypical Pneumonia01:14

Atypical Pneumonia

Atypical pneumonia, often caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae, is a form of pulmonary infection that differs from the classical presentation of bacterial pneumonia in both its cause and clinical symptoms. Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a pleomorphic bacterium notable for its lack of a rigid cell wall. This structural characteristic imparts resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics and significantly influences the bacterium’s behavior within the human host.Other pathogens responsible for the disease include...

Summary

Pulmonary metastases from pancreatic cancer are rare and seldom present with an alveolar pattern on CT scans. This case highlights an unusual presentation of pancreatic cancer lung metastases mimicking pneumonia.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Radiology
  • Pulmonology

Background:

  • Pulmonary metastases from pancreatic cancer are uncommon.
  • The typical radiological presentation of pancreatic cancer lung metastases is often nodular.
  • An alveolar pattern on computed tomography (CT) for lung metastases of pancreatic origin is exceptionally rare.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report a rare case of pancreatic cancer with pulmonary metastases presenting with an alveolar pattern on CT.
  • To discuss the diagnostic challenges and implications of this unusual presentation.

Main Methods:

  • Case report of a 77-year-old male patient.
  • Computed tomography (CT) imaging of the chest revealed ground-glass opacities and consolidations.
  • Incidental detection of a pancreatic tumor.
  • Histopathological examination of lung biopsy confirmed metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma.

Main Results:

  • The patient presented with symptoms suggestive of a respiratory infection.
  • CT findings showed diffuse ground-glass opacities and consolidations, mimicking pneumonia.
  • A pancreatic tumor was incidentally discovered and subsequently diagnosed as the primary source of the lung metastases.

Conclusions:

  • Pancreatic cancer can rarely metastasize to the lungs with an alveolar pattern on CT.
  • This presentation can mimic primary lung diseases, posing diagnostic challenges.
  • High index of suspicion and thorough investigation are crucial for diagnosing rare metastatic patterns.
