Abstract:
Rectal bleeding in infants is frequently regarded as an alarming symptom for healthcare providers and often causes significant concern and anxiety among parents. In this article, we discuss two infants who were urgently referred to pediatric services for further evaluation. Both infants showed no signs of illness. The diagnosis in one case was ingested maternal blood and in the other Food Protein-Induced Allergic Proctocolitis (FPIAP), triggered by cow's milk. FPIAP is a non-IgE-mediated food allergy. FPIAP can also occur in exclusively breastfed infants when the lactating mother consumes cow's milk. Symptoms typically resolve following the initiation of an elimination diet. The prognosis is favorable, as the condition is self-limiting and all affected children eventually outgrow the allergy.
