The Scientific Method in Nursing Process01:18

The Scientific Method in Nursing Process

18.9K
The scientific method provides the foundation for any research. It is the most reliable and objective of all forms of gaining knowledge and guides in applying research-based evidence in practice and conducting future research.
When using research findings to change practice, one must understand the process used to guide a study. The scientific method is a systematic, step-by-step process that supports the data's validity, reliability, and generalizability. As a result, findings can be...

Scientific Nature of Social Psychology01:30

Scientific Nature of Social Psychology

651
Social psychology is a scientific discipline dedicated to understanding how individuals think, feel, and behave in social contexts. Unlike common sense, which relies on anecdotal experiences and intuition, social psychology employs systematic research and empirical methods to ensure objectivity and reliability. This distinction is fundamental in distinguishing scientifically supported findings from mere speculation.Four fundamental scientific values guide a structured approach to research in...

Theoretical Foundations of Nursing Practice01:30

Theoretical Foundations of Nursing Practice

18.1K
Theories play an essential role in organizing patient care. Theories refer to a proposed or followed belief, policy, or procedure that is the basis for action. Nursing theories are knowledge-based concepts that guide nurses' actions, influence nursing education and practice, and allow nurses to care for their patients.
Theories provide a perspective to assess patients' conditions and organize data and methods. They also assist in analyzing and interpreting information. They represent a...

Nursing Code of Ethics01:29

Nursing Code of Ethics

5.0K
The Nursing Code of Ethics sets the ethical benchmark for the profession, and guides nurses in ethical analysis and decision making at the societal, organizational, and clinical levels. The code encompasses showing compassion and respect for the patient, their families, and communities in all circumstances while committing to providing patient-centered care. In addition, the code states that nurses must advocate for the patient by defending a cause or recommendation to protect their rights,...

Current Trends in Nursing II01:30

Current Trends in Nursing II

3.6K
Trends in nursing are multifactorial and associated with changes in society, within the nursing profession, and in other professions. Notably, telehealth and remote nursing contribute to successful healthcare delivery for numerous patients and help reduce stress for nurses due to nursing shortages. Nurses can reach patients, monitor their conditions, and interact with them using computers, audio, visual accessories, and telephones—for example, remote patient monitoring systems. Likewise,...

Sources of Law01:26

Sources of Law

1.9K
Laws form the essential rules set by governing authorities to shape and control societal behavior. In nursing, laws guide actions, safeguard patient rights, define nurses' scope of practice, and maintain professional standards. Understanding the legal framework governing nursing involves recognizing four primary sources of law: constitutional, statutory, administrative (regulatory), and common law.
Constitutional law is foundational, deriving from federal and state constitutions, and...

Area of Science:

  • Philosophy of Science
  • Nursing Science
  • Knowledge Management

Background:

  • Traditional philosophical accounts of science (Popper, Kuhn) are ill-suited for nursing.
  • Previous applications of these accounts to nursing yielded questionable results.
  • A new philosophical framework is needed to assess nursing's scientific status.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To apply Hoyningen-Huene's systematicity-based account of science to nursing.
  • To evaluate the scientific status of nursing knowledge using this framework.
  • To compare current nursing knowledge with its state prior to the Consensus Statement on Emerging Nursing Knowledge.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized Hoyningen-Huene's theory of systematicity.
  • Analyzed dimensions of systematicity: description, explanation, prediction, and defense of knowledge claims.
  • Compared nursing knowledge before and after the Consensus Statement on Emerging Nursing Knowledge.

Main Results:

  • Current nursing knowledge demonstrates increased systematicity across multiple dimensions.
  • Systematicity in prediction improved via classification systems.
  • Systematicity in defending knowledge claims enhanced through measurement devices.
  • Nursing science is organized like other scientific disciplines, contributing to its scientific status.

Conclusions:

  • Nursing knowledge meets the criteria for scientific status based on Hoyningen-Huene's account.
  • The increased systematicity of knowledge-gaining practices in nursing supports its scientific standing.
  • Nursing's scientific status is bolstered by its structured disciplinary organization and improved knowledge practices.
