Dengue and the industry: Mental health perspectives

Dengue fever, endemic in tropical regions, poses major challenges to industrial productivity through both direct health impacts and psychological sequelae. We conducted a comprehensive literature review examining the psychological impacts of dengue fever on industrial workers and broader economic disruptions from a psychiatric healthcare perspective, with particular focus on industrial settings. Dengue infection is associated with acute and persistent psychological symptoms, including anxiety (>50% during the acute phase), depression, sleep disturbances, and cognitive impairments. Industrial modeling suggests substantial workforce exposure risk and productivity losses, particularly in labor-intensive sectors. Dengue outbreaks create dual psychiatric burdens through individual psychological morbidity and systemic industrial disruptions. Proactive workplace mental health interventions, including screening protocols and employee assistance programs, are essential for industrial settings in endemic regions.
