A Brief History of SMART Health

Health informatics focuses on patient care and has a history dating at least to the 1960's. As a data rich domain, from the outset it has been an attractive target for artificial intelligence. Its key components are electronic records for care providers, in part to serve as the basis for clinical decision support; personal health records and increasingly devices to help patients stay healthy and manage disease; health information exchange for inter-provider cooperation and care coordination; and the data and interoperability standards that support it.
