Professional ballet dancers have a 100% return to dance (RTD) rate after surgery for musculoskeletal injuries. Dancers reported minimal pain and excellent physical health post-surgery, though mental health scores were satisfactory.
Area of Science:
- Orthopedics
- Sports Medicine
- Dance Science
Background:
- Limited research exists on return to dance (RTD) after surgery in ballet dancers.
- Musculoskeletal injuries are common in professional ballet.
Purpose of the Study:
- To characterize professional ballet dancers who had surgery for musculoskeletal issues.
- To report their RTD, physical health, and mental health outcomes post-surgery.
Main Methods:
- A case series design was used (Level of evidence, 4).
- Retrospective review of professional ballet dancers at the Opéra de Paris.
- Questionnaire data collected on RTD, pain, satisfaction, and health status (UCLA, SF-12).
Main Results:
- 18 dancers (11%) underwent 31 surgeries for musculoskeletal issues.
- 100% RTD was achieved at an average of 7 months post-surgery.
- Dancers reported low pain (1.6/10), high satisfaction (8.3/10), and good physical health (SF-12 physical component: 88.1/100).
Conclusions:
- High rates of RTD and good clinical outcomes are achievable for ballet dancers post-musculoskeletal surgery.
- Dancers experience significant recovery in physical function and pain levels.
- Mental health scores, while satisfactory, indicate potential areas for further support.
