Imaging Studies III: Computed Tomography

452
DefinitionComputed Tomography (CT) of the genitourinary (GU) tract is a non-invasive imaging modality that utilizes X-rays and computer processing to generate detailed cross-sectional images of the urinary system, encompassing the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and adjacent structures such as the adrenal glands.PurposeCT scans of the GU tract serve several diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, including:Diagnosis of Urinary Tract Diseases: Detects kidney stones, tumors, cysts, and congenital...

Imaging Studies for Cardiovascular System VI: Calcium -Scoring CT

578
Calcium-Scoring CT ScanA calcium-scoring CT scan, also known as coronary artery calcium (CAC) scan, detects calcium deposits in the coronary arteries. This test assesses the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD), which can lead to cardiovascular events such as angina, heart failure, and sudden cardiac arrest.A calcium-scoring CT scan is generally recommended for individuals at intermediate risk of CAD without symptoms. It includes:Men aged 40-75 and women aged 50-75: Especially those with a...

Imaging Studies for Cardiovascular System V: CT

412
Cardiac computed tomography (CT) scanning is an advanced cardiac imaging technique that utilizes CT technology, with or without intravenous (IV) contrast, to produce accurate cross-sectional virtual slices of specific areas of the heart, coronary circulation, and major blood vessels such as the aorta, pulmonary veins, and arteries. The computer processes these slices to generate three-dimensional images. Multidetector CT (MDCT) is a rapid form of CT scanning that captures multiple slices...

Imaging Studies for Cardiovascular System IV: CMRI

431
Cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging, or CMRI, is a non-invasive diagnostic test that employs a magnetic field and radiofrequency waves to create precise images of the heart and arteries. It provides comprehensive information about cardiac anatomy, function, perfusion, and tissue characterization without ionizing radiation.IndicationsCMRI diagnoses various heart conditions, including tissue damage from heart attacks, ischemic heart disease, myocarditis, aortic issues (tears, aneurysms,...

Radiological Investigation III: Pulmonary Angiogram and PET Scan

529
Radiological investigations are paramount in the diagnosis and management of various pulmonary diseases. Two essential investigations are the Pulmonary Angiogram and the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan.
Pulmonary Angiogram
A Pulmonary Angiogram is an invasive procedure involving injecting a contrast medium through a catheter threaded into the pulmonary artery or the right side of the heart to visualize the pulmonary vasculature. Computed Tomography (CT) scans have mainly replaced this...

Radiological Investigation II: MRI and Ventilation Perfusion Scan

722
Description
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Ventilation Perfusion Scans are two radiological investigations that offer detailed diagnostic images of the body, particularly lung structures.
MRI
MRI uses magnetic fields and radiofrequency signals to distinguish between normal and abnormal tissues. This technology provides a more detailed diagnostic image than CT scans, enabling it to characterize pulmonary nodules, stage bronchogenic carcinoma, and evaluate inflammatory activity in...

Area of Science:

  • Dentistry
  • Radiology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Dental caries detection remains a challenge, necessitating advanced imaging techniques.
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) offers a non-ionizing radiation alternative for visualizing dental tissues.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of two MRI sequences, 3D Stack of Stars GRE (StarVIBE) and pointwise encoding time reduction with radial acquisition (PETRA), for detecting dental caries.
  • To evaluate MRI-based caries detection against the gold standard of clinical examination and bitewing radiography.

Main Methods:

  • Subjects underwent clinical dental evaluation and bitewing radiography.
  • Viscerocranium MRI was performed using both 3D StarVIBE and 3D PETRA sequences.
  • Caries lesions were assessed for depth (D1-D4), and signal intensity was measured in dental tissues, pulp, and lesions.

Main Results:

  • MRI detected all 10 clinically and radiographically identified caries lesions, plus 5 additional lesions.
  • Image quality and diagnostic confidence were significantly higher for PETRA (4.7) than StarVIBE (3.9).
  • PETRA demonstrated significantly higher signal intensity (-0.5 a.u.) and lesion volume (18 mm³ ) for caries compared to StarVIBE (-4.2 a.u., 11 mm³).

Conclusions:

  • MRI is a valuable tool for caries detection, surpassing traditional methods by identifying additional lesions.
  • The PETRA MRI sequence provides superior quantitative visualization of dental caries compared to the StarVIBE sequence.
