Psychological First-Aid Interventions and Training in Disaster Response: A Systematic Review
Chelsea Spencer1, Brooke Keilholtz1
1Department of Applied Human Sciences, Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS, USA.
Purpose:
Psychological First Aid (PFA) is a widely utilized early intervention aimed at lessening acute psychological distress, promoting adaptive functioning, and supporting the recovery process following traumatic events. This systematic review synthesizes existing literature on PFA interventions and trainings.
Materials And Methods:
Peer-reviewed articles published between 2000 and 2025 were systematically searched across 6 electronic databases. Forty-six studies met the criteria for inclusion and Braun and Clarke's (2006) six steps to conduct a thematic analysis were followed for these studies.
Results:
When reviewing studies addressing interventions of PFA, four themes were identified: rapid assessment and connecting to community resources, psychoeducation and coping skills training, social support, and the importance of adapting interventions. For training those providing PFA, five themes were identified: pre-disaster and ongoing training, active and reflective listening, trauma-informed training, support and self-care for MH responders, and train the trainer model.
Discussion And Conclusion:
Implications for practice, training, and future research directions are discussed.
