    Area of Science:

    • Behavioral Psychology
    • Clinical Psychology
    • Public Health

    Background:

    • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), a third-generation cognitive behavioral therapy, is increasingly used for smoking cessation.
    • Existing research on ACT for smoking cessation requires comprehensive review to understand its progress, scope, findings, and limitations.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To systematically review the application of ACT in smoking cessation.
    • To analyze the current research landscape and identify future theoretical insights and solutions for smoking cessation.

    Main Methods:

    • A systematic literature search was conducted across ten major databases up to March 20, 2024.
    • Data extraction and analysis were performed by two independent researchers on 35 included articles from eight countries.

    Main Results:

    • The review included 35 articles, encompassing diverse smoker populations (general and special needs) and intervention delivery methods (face-to-face, online).
    • ACT interventions focused on core ACT principles, with outcomes assessing cessation rates, feasibility, acceptability, and craving management.

    Conclusions:

    • ACT-based interventions are a safe and effective strategy for smoking cessation, particularly for patients with co-occurring mental health conditions.
    • Further research is recommended to optimize the quality and efficacy of ACT interventions for smoking cessation.
