Bonanno's Theory of Grieving01:17

Bonanno's Theory of Grieving

1.1K
Grieving is a complex psychological and emotional process that varies significantly among individuals. George Bonanno's research on bereavement identified four distinct patterns of grieving, offering a nuanced understanding of how people cope with significant loss, such as the death of a spouse, over extended periods. These patterns — resilience, recovery, chronic dysfunction, and delayed grief — highlight the diversity in emotional responses and adaptive mechanisms.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder01:27

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

671
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition that arises following exposure to traumatic events such as natural disasters, forced displacement, or severe accidents. It significantly impairs individuals' ability to cope with daily activities and disrupts their emotional and psychological equilibrium.
Symptoms and Behavioral Manifestations
A spectrum of distressing symptoms characterizes PTSD. Recurrent flashbacks, where individuals involuntarily relive traumatic events,...

Long-term Depression

33.5K
Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.

Depressive Disorders: Etiology

793
Depressive disorders result from a complex interplay of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors, each contributing uniquely to the development and persistence of the condition. Understanding these factors provides critical insight into the multifaceted nature of depression.
Biological Factors in Depression
Biological predispositions significantly influence the risk of developing depressive disorders. Genetic studies highlight the role of variations in the serotonin transporter...

Introduction to Stress and Lifestyle

699
Stress is a multifaceted response to events perceived as challenging or threatening, highlighting physical, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral reactions. Physically, stress can lead to fatigue, sleep disruptions, and various health issues such as frequent colds, chest pains, and nausea. Emotionally, it can manifest as anxiety, depression, irritability, and anger triggered by both minor and major life events. Cognitively, it may result in difficulty in concentration, memory, and...

Summary

Persistent grief symptoms predict depression and posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms, and vice versa. Acute grief levels early after loss influence later symptoms, highlighting potential intervention targets for bereaved adults.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Psychiatry
  • Bereavement Studies

Background:

  • Prolonged grief symptoms frequently co-occur with depressive and posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms.
  • The temporal dynamics between prolonged grief and other postloss psychopathology are not fully understood.
  • Understanding these relationships is crucial for effective treatment of bereaved adults.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the temporal relationships between prolonged grief, depressive, and PTS symptoms in bereaved adults.
  • To identify potential causal pathways and inform clinical interventions.

Main Methods:

  • Longitudinal study design with 307 bereaved adults within their first year of bereavement.
  • Symptom assessment (prolonged grief, depressive, PTS) at five time points, 1.5 months apart.
  • Analysis using random-intercept cross-lagged panel modeling to examine reciprocal relationships.

Main Results:

  • Elevated prolonged grief symptoms predicted other psychopathology symptoms, and vice versa, in bivariate analyses.
  • Within-person changes in acute grief (0-6 months postloss) predicted subsequent depressive and PTS symptoms.
  • No significant reciprocal prediction was found from depressive or PTS symptoms to acute grief.
  • Stable individual differences accounted for the majority of symptom variance.

Conclusions:

  • Reciprocal relationships exist between prolonged grief and other postloss symptoms.
  • Acute grief reactions appear to be a significant predictor of later psychopathology.
  • Targeting acute grief may be a viable strategy for preventing the development of other postloss symptoms.
