Nursing Assessment of the Genitourinary System I: Health History01:21

Nursing Assessment of the Genitourinary System I: Health History

499
The genitourinary system is critical to maintaining fluid balance, waste elimination, and reproductive function. Nurses play a vital role in assessing this system, beginning with a thorough health history. This process involves gathering patient information, identifying risk factors, and recognizing symptoms of genitourinary disorders. Early detection is vital for timely interventions and management.1. Gathering Patient InformationA complete health history includes the patient’s personal,...

Nursing Assessment01:29

Nursing Assessment

9.6K
The two sources for collecting information are primary and secondary. After gathering information, interpretation and validation help to complete the data. The purpose of assessment is to establish data with the initial information, to interpret data about the patient's perceived needs and health problems, and to respond to these problems identified.
The nurse collects all aspects of the patient's health in the initial assessment, establishing priorities for ongoing focused assessments...

Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching I: Assessment and Diagnosis

2.6K
The nursing process provides a clinical decision-making framework for patients and families to establish and implement a personalized care plan. Since part of the nurse's duties is to teach patients, the steps of the nursing process are the most effective way to approach instruction. The nursing process and the teaching-learning process are inextricably linked.
It is critical to determine the patient's learning needs during the assessment. Determination of learning needs compounds data...

Assessment of the Cardiovascular System I: Subjective Data

980
A thorough health history and physical assessment are essential for identifying cardiovascular disease (CVD) symptoms and distinguishing them from other health issues.
Initial Enquiry
Ask the patient about their primary concern and thoroughly explore all reported symptoms.
Medical History
Investigate past illnesses affecting the cardiovascular system, such as angina, anemia, rheumatic fever, congenital heart disease, stroke, thrombophlebitis, dysrhythmias, varicosities
Inquire about symptoms...

Nursing Evaluation01:15

Nursing Evaluation

4.6K
The evaluation stage signals the end of the nursing process. The nurse gathers evaluative data to assess whether or not the patient has attained the expected results. Whereas the nurse collects data in the nursing assessment to identify the patient's health concerns, the evaluation stage data determines if the indicated health issues are resolved. Evaluative data collection includes two sections: the data acquired to evaluate patient outcomes and the time criteria for data collection.

Nursing Assessment of the Genitourinary System II: Inspection and Palpation

1.0K
The nursing assessment of the genitourinary (GU) system involves a systematic inspection and palpation to identify abnormalities in the kidneys, bladder, and surrounding structures.InspectionMouth: Inspect for signs of kidney dysfunction, such as stomatitis (inflammation of the mouth) and ammonia breath, which may occur in advanced kidney disease due to the buildup of urea, breaking down into ammonia.Skin: Check for pallor, which could indicate anemia caused by kidney disease. Look for...

Area of Science:

  • Nursing Education
  • Sexual Health Communication
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • Sexual health is vital in nursing care but often neglected.
  • Nursing students frequently lack adequate communication skills for sexual health discussions.
  • Limited culturally adapted tools exist for assessing Serbian nursing students' attitudes and barriers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To psychometrically evaluate the Serbian version of the SA-SH-Ext scale.
  • To explore nursing students' attitudes and barriers regarding sexual health communication.

Main Methods:

  • Sequential mixed-methods design.
  • Quantitative phase: 180 nursing students completed SA-SH-Ext and SABS scales; psychometric analysis (EFA, CFA, reliability).
  • Qualitative phase: Semi-structured interviews with 20 students explored experiences and challenges.

Main Results:

  • Factor analysis supported a four-factor model (Being Comfortable, Communication with People with Disabilities, Future Patient and Working Relations, Education and Competence), explaining 60.6% of variance.
  • The Serbian SA-SH-Ext demonstrated strong internal consistency.
  • Qualitative data highlighted student discomfort, insufficient training, and fear of patient reactions, particularly with vulnerable patient groups.

Conclusions:

  • The Serbian SA-SH-Ext is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing readiness in sexual health communication.
  • Nursing students exhibit positive attitudes but face significant barriers to discussing sexual health.
  • Integrating structured sexual health education into nursing curricula is crucial for enhancing competence and reducing stigma.
