Behavior Modification

796
Behavioral approaches have often been criticized for ignoring mental processes and focusing solely on observable behavior. However, these approaches provide an optimistic perspective for individuals seeking to change their behaviors. Rather than concentrating on intrinsic personality traits, behavioral approaches suggest that even longstanding habits can be modified by changing the reward contingencies that maintain them.

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques III

393
Regular exercise and meditation serve as essential tools in managing stress and promoting physical and mental well-being.
The Role of Exercise in Stress Management
Regular physical activity is essential for reducing stress and promoting cardiovascular health. Exercise strengthens the heart, enhances blood flow, keeps blood vessels flexible, and helps lower blood pressure, all of which reduce the body's stress response. Research shows that adults who exercise regularly have nearly half the...

This inward focus transforms the self into an object of contemplation and assessment, influencing how individuals perceive their actions and their alignment with personal and societal standards.Triggers and Contexts for Self-AwarenessSelf-awareness can be activated by external stimuli that make individuals visually or audibly aware of themselves, such as mirrors, cameras, or recordings.

Behaviorism01:28

Behaviorism

6.8K
The field of behaviorism was pioneered by figures such as Ivan Pavlov, John B. Watson, and B.F. Skinner fundamentally shifted the focus of psychology to the observable and controllable aspects of human and animal behavior. This shift marked a critical evolution in the discipline, emphasizing scientific rigor and experimental methodology.
The core premise of behaviorism is its focus on observable behavior rather than internal thoughts or feelings. This approach argues that true scientific...

The Scientific Method02:40

The Scientific Method

66.3K
Research is what makes the difference between facts and opinions. Facts are observable realities, and opinions are personal judgments, conclusions, or attitudes that may or may not be accurate. In the scientific community, facts can be established only using evidence collected through empirical research.

Summary

Mindfulness training for dog owners significantly reduced reports of stranger-directed aggression and fear in dogs. However, the mindfulness program did not alter the perceived quality of the dog-owner relationship.

Area of Science:

  • Human-Animal Interaction
  • Behavioral Science
  • Mindfulness Studies

Background:

  • Mindfulness practices enhance human emotional regulation and attention.
  • The effect of mindfulness on owner perception of companion animal behavior is under-researched.
  • Investigating mindfulness's impact on evaluating dog behavior and the dog-owner bond.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess if an 8-week Mindfulness-Based Human-Animal Relationship (MBHAR) program influences owner evaluations of dog behavior.
  • To determine the program's effect on the perceived quality of the dog-owner relationship.

Main Methods:

  • An 8-week MBHAR program versus a control group.
  • Utilized validated Italian versions of the Canine Behavioral Assessment and Research Questionnaire (C-BARQ) and Monash Dog-Owner Relationship Scale (MDORS).
  • Statistical analysis included Wilcoxon signed-rank tests and Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMMs).

Main Results:

  • A significant decrease in owner-reported "Stranger-directed aggression/fear" was observed in the MBHAR group.
  • No significant changes were detected in the Monash Dog-Owner Relationship Scale (MDORS) scores.
  • Mindfulness practice specifically impacted owner perception of specific canine behaviors.

Conclusions:

  • Mindfulness training can alter owner perception of dog behavior, particularly fear and aggression towards strangers.
  • This perceptual shift may aid in managing canine behavioral issues.
  • The short-term impact on the structural dog-owner relationship quality appears limited.
