Background:

Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) are vital in the rehabilitation of persons with aphasia (PWA).
Treatment efficacy is influenced by clinician, patient, and service availability factors.
This study explores current aphasia rehabilitation practices, challenges, and future directions in India from SLPs' perspectives.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate current practices in aphasia rehabilitation in the Indian context.
To identify key challenges faced by SLPs in aphasia rehabilitation.
To explore future directions for improving aphasia rehabilitation services in India.

Main Methods:

A web-based survey with a 32-item questionnaire was administered to SLPs.
Data collected included demographic details, knowledge/use of rehabilitation approaches, and challenges faced.
142 responses were analyzed to assess knowledge, confidence, and challenges in aphasia rehabilitation.

Main Results:

Significant challenges exist in aphasia assessment due to a lack of formal screening tools in multiple Indian languages.
Variations in SLPs' knowledge and confidence necessitate targeted training programs.
Managing bilingual/multilingual PWA presents difficulties; patient-related challenges include funding, logistics, and social support.

Conclusions:

Aphasia rehabilitation in India faces significant clinician- and patient-related challenges.
Urgent actions are needed to address these challenges and enhance services for PWA.
Future directions include improving tele-rehabilitation and developing resources in Indian languages.
