Aim:
This study compared the effectiveness, color stability, and patient satisfaction of Opalescence Endo and 30% hydrogen peroxide (HP) with sodium perborate in internal (walking) bleaching of discolored, root canal-treated maxillary anteriors.
Materials And Methods:
A total of 122 discolored teeth were randomly allocated into two groups: Group 1: Opalescence Endo (n = 61) and Group 2: 30% hp with sodium perborate (n = 61). Patients were recalled at 7-day intervals, with a maximum of three bleaching sessions. Bleaching efficacy was assessed subjectively using a 5-point Visual Analog Scale and objectively using CIELAB (∆E, Lightness Deviation Percentage, Lightness Recovery Percentage, L*).
Statistical Analysis:
Mann-Whitney U-test and Wilcoxon test were conducted for intergroup and intragroup comparisons, respectively.
Results:
Significant differences were observed in the L* value after treatment (Group 1: 81.66 and Group 2: 83.52), total days taken for bleaching (Group 1: 16.76 days and Group 2: 21.80 days), and the first-time color change noted by the patient (Group 1: 1.95 days and Group 2: 3 days), favoring the Opalescence Endo. For severely discolored teeth (n = 15), a significant difference was observed in Lightness Recovery Percentage between the groups (Group 1: 72.97% and Group 2: 53.17%). Both groups showed high patient satisfaction and color stability over 12 months.
Conclusion:
Opalescence Endo demonstrated superior performance and faster bleaching compared to 30% HP with sodium perborate.
