Experiences of nurses caring for earthquake victims in Istanbul, 2023 Pazarcık earthquake

In Turkey, two major earthquakes occurred on February 6, 2023 with an interval of approximately 9 h. Continuity of health services is important in any disaster. It is known that health workers, especially nurses, who constitute a large group, play an important role in disasters.

This is a qualitative study using phenomenological methodology. Data were collected with identification form and semi-structured interview forms through face-to-face between March and April 2023 with 11 nurses. The Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research guidelines were followed. The MAXQDA program was used for data analysis.

The study was grouped under four themes and 16 sub-themes: feelings while giving care, differences in care, difficulties experienced in care and suggestions to facilitate care.

This study revealed that nurses experienced empathy, altruism, and professional satisfaction while providing patient care after the 2023 Pazarcık Earthquake, alongside significant challenges such as communication barriers and organizational shortcomings. The findings highlight the need for clear disaster care algorithms and specialized teams, and may inform hospital disaster planning and strategies to better support nurses in future crises.
