Intratympanic steroid for residual dizziness after benign paroxysmal positional vertigo: a randomized controlled

Objective:
This study investigates the effectiveness of intratympanic steroid treatment in managing residual dizziness after benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and its impact on quality of life.
Methods:
Fifty-six patients with unilateral posterior canal BPPV without nystagmus after the Epley maneuver were randomized into two groups. Group 1 received intratympanic steroids (two sessions) with the canalith repositioning maneuver, while Group 2 received only the maneuver. Patients were assessed using the Dizziness Handicap Inventory (DHI), Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and residual dizziness evaluation on Day 1 and Day 10.
Results:
Baseline assessments showed no significant differences between groups. On Day 10, Group 1 showed significantly greater improvement in residual dizziness (p = 0.036) and Physical DHI scores (p = 0.047), while other DHI and VAS scores remained similar.
Conclusion:
This study is the first to show that intratympanic steroids significantly reduce residual dizziness, potentially accelerating recovery and improving quality of life in BPPV patients.
