Practices, Perceptions, and Attitudes of Speech-Language Pathologists in Hong Kong on Using Telepractice for...

This study investigated the current practices, perceptions, and attitudes of telepractice for pediatric voice therapy from the perspective of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in Hong Kong in the post-Coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic era. Supports needed to facilitate this mode of service delivery were also examined.

SLPs with experience in pediatric voice therapy were invited to complete an anonymous online survey. The survey has three sections: i) Demographic information, ii) Current practice of telepractice in pediatric voice therapy, and iii) Perceptions toward using telepractice in pediatric voice therapy. Data collection commenced on 16 March 2025 and continued for a month until 18 April 2025.

In total, 100 responses were received in total, with 63 completed responses included in the analysis. In total, 15 respondents had managed pediatric voice cases online. The remaining 48 respondents managed cases in-person only. Major reported challenges to telepractice implementation included poor voice quality perceptions, poor technological equipment and internet connection, and difficulties in managing clients with complex clinical profiles. Respondents suggested the need for improvements in internet connectivity and technology, more training, access to shared resources, and the development of standard guidelines to enhance and facilitate telepractice effectiveness.

The use of telepractice to deliver pediatric voice therapy remains unpopular in Hong Kong in the post-pandemic era. Respondents expressed low confidence and competence in online management. Directions for enhancing online voice therapy for children were identified, emphasizing the need for corresponding measures to promote and improve its delivery.
