A novel branched functional polyethylene (PE) was synthesized using a two-step method. This new material integrates polar segments, enhancing mechanical properties and enabling versatile applications as a toughener and compatibilizer.
Area of Science:
- Polymer Chemistry
- Materials Science
- Organic Synthesis
Background:
- Developing functional polymers with tailored architectures is crucial for advanced material applications.
- Existing polyethylene (PE) materials often lack sufficient polarity and mechanical strength for specialized uses.
- Integrating polar segments into nonpolar polymer backbones presents synthetic challenges.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop a novel branched functional polyethylene (PE) with multiple polar segments.
- To create a material with tunable molecular weights and polar/nonpolar ratios.
- To evaluate the mechanical properties and application potential of the synthesized PE.
Main Methods:
- A two-step synthesis combining coordination polymerization and radical polymerization.
- Copolymerization of ethylene with polar dienes using a binuclear nickel catalyst to create PE with methacrylate pendants.
- Radical copolymerization of the functionalized PE with methyl methacrylate (MMA) to incorporate PMMA segments.
Main Results:
- Successfully synthesized branched functional PE with tailored molecular weights (350-2300 kg/mol) and polar/nonpolar ratios (1/38-1/3 molar).
- Incorporation of PMMA segments significantly enhanced mechanical properties, increasing fracture strength from 6.18 to 19.64 MPa.
- The resultant material demonstrated mechanical properties comparable to polar polyolefin elastomers (POEs).
Conclusions:
- The developed two-step synthesis effectively produces branched functional PE with integrated polar segments.
- The new PE material exhibits significant mechanical reinforcement and versatile applications.
- This functional PE can serve as an effective toughener for PMMA and a compatibilizer for POE/PMMA blends.

Types of Step-Growth Polymers: Polyesters
Polyesters are commonly prepared from terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol; the crude product is known as poly(ethylene terephthalate) or PET. However, polyesters are synthesized industrially by transesterification of dimethyl terephthalate with ethylene glycol at 150 °C. The two reactants and the polymer...
