Stress and Mental Health01:30

Stress and Mental Health

1.0K
Chronic stress profoundly affects mental health, significantly influencing mood, behavior, and overall quality of life. Research closely links chronic stress with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Ongoing exposure to stress can lead to physiological and psychological changes, initiating a cycle of emotional distress and maladaptive coping mechanisms.
Individuals with depression often experience challenges in both their personal and professional...

Schemas01:42

Schemas

12.5K
A schema is a mental construct consisting of a cluster or collection of related concepts (Bartlett, 1932). There are many different types of schemata, and they all have one thing in common: schemata are a method of organizing information that allows the brain to work more efficiently. When a schema is activated, the brain makes immediate assumptions about the person or object being observed.

Social Foundations of Self IV: Self in Digital Communication

226
Since the early 2000s, computer-mediated communication (CMC) has grown rapidly, playing a crucial role in self-development. A key distinction between CMC and real-life interactions is the lack of a physically present partner. This absence makes non-verbal cues such as facial expressions, body language, and paralinguistic signals unavailable in CMC platforms like email, instant messaging, or social media. The lack of these cues can create ambiguity and complicate how feedback is interpreted.The...

Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

612
Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.
Participant Modeling
Participant modeling involves therapists demonstrating calm and effective behaviors in...

Self-Discrepancy Theory02:45

Self-Discrepancy Theory

19.0K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Area of Science:

  • Digital Health
  • Mental Health
  • Student Well-being

Background:

  • The pervasive use of digital technology among students raises concerns about potential negative impacts on mental health and well-being.
  • Understanding the interplay between technology addiction, eHealth literacy, and psychosocial factors is crucial for developing targeted interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the prevalence of smartphone and internet addiction among health sciences students.
  • To examine the relationships between smartphone addiction, internet addiction, eHealth literacy, social support, loneliness, depression, and sleep quality.
  • To investigate the mediating role of social support and eHealth literacy in these relationships.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 447 health sciences students in Hanoi.
  • Validated instruments were used to measure smartphone addiction, internet addiction, eHealth literacy, social support, loneliness, depression, and sleep quality.
  • Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to analyze the data.

Main Results:

  • Moderate levels of smartphone and internet addiction were reported.
  • Internet addiction directly predicted higher depression, poorer sleep quality, and lower social support.
  • Smartphone addiction was associated with increased loneliness and eHealth literacy.
  • Social support significantly mediated the negative impacts of internet addiction on depression, loneliness, and sleep quality.

Conclusions:

  • Problematic smartphone and internet use among health science students is associated with adverse mental health outcomes and sleep disturbances.
  • Enhancing social support is a more effective strategy than solely focusing on eHealth literacy for mitigating these harms.
  • Universities should prioritize initiatives promoting digital well-being, limiting excessive technology use, and fostering a supportive campus environment.
