This study reports a rare case of bilateral synchronous male breast cancer (MBC), including invasive ductal carcinoma and invasive lobular carcinoma, in an elderly man with a BRCA2 gene mutation. The patient underwent surgery and is currently under observation due to advanced age.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Genetics
- Pathology
Background:
- Male breast cancer (MBC) is rare, <1% of all breast cancers.
- Bilateral synchronous MBC is exceptionally uncommon.
- Lobular carcinoma in males is rare, 1-2% of MBC cases.
Purpose of the Study:
- To report an extremely rare case of bilateral synchronous male breast cancer.
- To highlight the occurrence of both invasive ductal and lobular carcinoma in the same patient.
- To discuss the implications of a BRCA2 mutation in male breast cancer.
Main Methods:
- Case presentation of an elderly male patient with bilateral breast masses.
- Diagnostic workup including imaging and biopsy.
- Genetic testing for BRCA2 mutation.
- Surgical management for bilateral breast cancer.
Main Results:
- Diagnosis of invasive ductal carcinoma (left breast) and invasive lobular carcinoma (right breast).
- Identification of a pathogenic BRCA2 gene mutation (c.331_347delinsC).
- Successful simultaneous surgery for bilateral disease.
Conclusions:
- This case underscores the possibility of synchronous bilateral male breast cancer with different histological types.
- BRCA2 mutations should be considered in male breast cancer patients, especially with a family history.
- Management decisions, including adjuvant therapy, require careful consideration of patient age and overall health.
