Background:

High workload among general practitioners (GPs) negatively impacts clinician well-being and patient care quality.
Ambient scribes are emerging technologies to alleviate documentation burden, but evidence is limited, especially regarding patient perspectives.
Existing research often overlooks the multifaceted impact of ambient scribes on the clinical encounter.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the effectiveness of an ambient scribe in reducing clinical documentation time for GPs.
To assess the impact of ambient scribes on total consultation time, documentation quality, and both patient and GP experiences.
To explore the acceptability and usage patterns of ambient scribes in a real-world primary care setting.

Main Methods:

A prospective, multicentre, multi-perspective, before-after longitudinal mixed-methods study was conducted.
12 GPs and GPs in training with no prior ambient scribe experience participated.
Data collected included clinical documentation time, consultation time, documentation quality, patient/GP experiences, acceptability, and usage over baseline and intervention periods for 535 consultations.

Main Results:

Clinical documentation time per consultation decreased by 42.7 seconds (p < 0.0001).
Total consultation time remained unchanged.

Ambient scribing shows promise in reducing documentation burden and supporting communication in primary care.

Mitigating these drawbacks is crucial for optimizing the quality and accessibility of care when implementing ambient scribe technology.
