Summary

An eclectic voice therapy approach, incorporating vocal hygiene, manual therapy, facilitating techniques, and TENS, significantly improved dysphonia in functional voice disorders. Ten of 24 therapies showed significant benefits.

  • To systematically review and perform a network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials on voice therapy for functional voice disorders.

  • Systematic review and network meta-analysis of 30 randomized controlled trials (1210 patients).
  • Searched MEDLINE, CENTRAL, Scopus, and Web of Science databases.
  • Evaluated 24 voice treatments against placebo/no treatment using perceptual ratings of voice quality.

  • An eclectic approach (vocal hygiene, manual therapy, facilitating techniques, TENS) was most effective (MD -1.97).
  • Other significant therapies included variants of the eclectic approach, facilitating techniques alone, and vocal function exercises.

Conclusions:

  • Several voice therapy approaches significantly improve dysphonia in functional voice disorders.
