In this article, we aim to promote discussion about veterinary residents' clinical teaching. We highlight the need to acknowledge and understand the important role veterinary residents play in the clinical education of students in university teaching hospitals. There is a paucity of available information on veterinary residents' contribution to clinical teaching and how they perceive their teaching role. This is in contrast to the medical education literature, which has long recognized medical residents' critically important role as clinical teachers. We draw on the medical resident-as-teacher literature, identifying comparisons with general veterinary education contexts. We also emphasize the need to understand how veterinary residents perceive themselves as educators, as well as to consider context-specific professional development opportunities to support veterinary residents in their teaching roles.
