Abstract:
Tracheostomy-related hemorrhage, though uncommon, is a potentially fatal complication that necessitates immediate recognition and intervention. Bleeding may arise shortly after the procedure or long after placement, varying from minor stomal oozing to catastrophic hemorrhage due to tracheoinnominate fistula. Causes are broadly classified into extraluminal and intraluminal sources, with systemic factors like coagulopathy further exacerbating risk. Comprehensive understanding of tracheal anatomy, procedural methods, and potential vascular variants is essential for prevention and management. Equipping health care providers with appropriate bedside tools, including airway cards, suction apparatus, and endoscopic instruments, is critical for effective and timely management of tracheostomy-related bleeding emergencies.
