Body checking (BC) in healthy individuals does not reduce negative affect as hypothesized. This study found BC increased negative affect and pathology, challenging theories of short-term relief in eating disorders (EDs), body dysmorphic disorder (BDD), and illness anxiety disorder (IAD).
