Adaptive Mechanisms in Cancer Cells02:53

Adaptive Mechanisms in Cancer Cells

7.2K
Cancer cells accumulate genetic changes at an abnormally rapid rate due to the defects in the DNA repair mechanisms. From an evolutionary perspective, such genetic instability is advantageous for cancer development. Mutant cell lines accumulate a series of beneficial mutations that contribute to their progression into cancer.
Some of the advantages that cancer cells have on normal cells include - enhanced ability to divide without terminally differentiating, induce new blood vessel formation,...

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Rehabilitation Medicine
  • Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare

Background:

  • Evidence-based physical activity (PA) and exercise are crucial for comprehensive cancer rehabilitation.
  • Access to cancer rehabilitation is limited by patient, provider, and organizational barriers.
  • Artificial intelligence (AI) offers potential solutions to scale rehabilitation and address care gaps.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce the concept of AI-supported cancer rehabilitation.
  • To synthesize emerging evidence on AI's role in PA and exercise interventions for cancer patients.

Main Methods:

  • Narrative review of existing literature on AI applications in cancer rehabilitation.
  • Synthesis of evidence on AI for patient screening, outcome prediction, engagement, and exercise prescription.

Main Results:

  • Research on AI in cancer rehabilitation is nascent.
  • AI applications include patient identification, exercise response prediction, engagement enhancement, and precision exercise.
  • Early AI interventions show modest improvements in PA, but evidence is limited.

Conclusions:

  • Ethically designed AI tools can potentially overcome barriers to cancer rehabilitation access and delivery.
  • Multidisciplinary collaboration and patient engagement are key for effective AI implementation.
  • Further research is needed to address ethical, equity, and implementation challenges of AI in cancer care.
