Mentoring nurses through global partnerships: A scoping review

Mentorship through international partnerships strengthens global health capacity.

To synthesize evidence related to the mentoring of nurses and midwives in academic, clinical, and community settings through Global North and Global South partnerships.

Following the scoping reviews reporting guideline, the Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome selection criteria were employed. Three databases were searched, and a directed content analysis approach was applied.

Evidence from 44 articles showed global mentoring partnerships were based on academia, clinical practice, research, or a combination of classifications. Domains encompassing the characteristics, facilitators, barriers, and outcomes of mentorship included structural and relational dimensions, capacity strengthening, sustainability, and transformation of personal and professional environments.

Few mentorship programs are guided by theoretical frameworks, and limited attention is given to reciprocity and power dynamics. Available evidence will inform a future operational model for sustainable and reciprocal mentoring applicable to international professional organizations.
