Background:
Advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) have low participation in health policy and legislative advocacy.
Purpose:
To measure (a) APRN participation in health policy and legislative advocacy and (b) explore the effect of the 2024 federal election on policy participation.
Methods:
Quantitative, nonexperimental, survey design using the validated Waddell Spectrum for Policy Participation Influence and Research (WSPPIR) instrument.
Discussion:
175 APRNs participated. WSPPIR scale reliability was high (Cronbach's α 0.910). WSPPIR scores were low, indicating modest involvement in health policy for APRN's. APRNs highly value health policy and feel they are influential. Health policy participation via employing institutions was weekly-monthly. Professional nursing organization policy participation was minimal. For every increase in WSPPIR scale score, participants were 6.4% more likely to report the 2024 federal election impacted their policy engagement.
Conclusion:
Encourage participation in health policy and legislative advocacy via professional nursing organizations, health care delivery systems, and use federal elections to galvanize participation.
