Remifentanil Diminishes Stimulation-Induced Oral Tissue Blood Flow Changes
Objective:
This study aimed to investigate the effects of remifentanil infusion under inhaled anesthesia on changes in oral tissue blood flow and tissue oxygen tension during noxious stimulation of the oral region.
Methods:
Sixteen male Japan White rabbits were used. General anesthesia was maintained with sevoflurane or desflurane. Systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean blood pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR), mandibular bone marrow tissue blood flow (BBF), masseter muscle tissue blood flow (MBF), mandibular bone marrow tissue oxygen tension (PbO2), and masseter muscle tissue oxygen tension (PmO2) were measured before and after electrical stimulation, with and without remifentanil.
Results:
Remifentanil decreased the rate of change in SBP, DBP, MAP, BBF, and MBF, whereas PbO2 and PmO2 remained unchanged.
Conclusion:
Remifentanil suppressed hemodynamics and oral tissue blood flow changes after electrical stimulation and maintained oral tissue oxygen tension.
