Reverse osmosis (RO) is becoming the backbone of global water supply, but its rapid scale-up is creating a parallel, largely unmanaged waste stream of end-of-life (EoL) spiral-wound modules (SWMs). Most proposed EoL solutions are inherently destructive, relying on disassembly or aggressive chemistries that are impractical to control and scale for intact modules. Here we argue that the field is solving the wrong problem: thin-film composite SWMs are engineered systems in which a long-lived chassis (backing, support layers, spacers, and housing) carries a short-lived engine (selective layer). Treating the entire module as disposable is therefore a structural mismatch that blocks circularity. We introduce the Perpetual Life Series, a multi-life framework that keeps SWMs intact and enables in-situ repurposing. Life 1 is prolonged through operational optimization and mild, partial oxidation coupled with green coatings. At EoL 1, modules transition to Life 2 via an in-situ strip-heal-coat sequence: optimized oxidation resets the surface, followed by green coatings that heal defects, tune selectivity, and act as sacrificial shields. Iterative cycles unlock progressively lower-pressure roles before ultimate material or energy recovery. We outline the research, policy, and operational priorities needed to make intact-module repurposing a scalable alternative to single-use disposal.
