Peripheral Artery Disease III: Interprofessional Care

472
Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) is characterized by narrowed arteries that diminish blood flow to the extremities. Effective management of PAD requires an interprofessional approach involving various healthcare professionals. The critical aspects of interprofessional care for PAD patients focus on risk factor modification, drug therapy, exercise therapy, nutrition therapy, critical limb ischemia care, and interventional radiology and surgical procedures. The primary treatment goal for PAD...

Analgesia and Pain Management

2.6K
Pain is critical to various clinical pathologies, provoking an urgent need for effective management. Pain, whether acute or chronic, is a complex neurochemical process. Its alleviation depends on the type, with nonopioid analgesics effective for mild to moderate pain, such as musculoskeletal or inflammatory pain, while neuropathic pain responds best to anticonvulsants, tricyclic antidepressants, or serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. For severe acute or chronic pain, opioids may be...

Restorative Care01:19

Restorative Care

2.4K
Restorative care is provided once a patient has been discharged from a healthcare facility and requires additional services. The additional services include home care, rehabilitation programs, and extended care. Restorative care centers help the patient regain their previous level of functioning or acquire a new level of functioning due to the incapacitating effects of a disease or a disability. It aims to assist patients in enhancing their quality of life by encouraging independence,...

Acute Kidney Injury V: Interprofessional Care

438
Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) requires a collaborative healthcare approach to restore renal function and prevent complications. Essential management strategies involve monitoring fluid and electrolyte balance, adjusting medications, initiating dialysis when necessary, and providing nutritional support.Fluid and Electrolyte ManagementFluid Monitoring: Regularly monitoring body weight, central venous pressure, and urine output helps detect fluid imbalances early. Patient intake and output are...

Area of Science:

  • Pain Medicine
  • Adolescent Health
  • Psychology

Background:

  • Chronic pain impacts 1 in 9 young adults globally.
  • Intensive interdisciplinary pain treatment (IIPT) shows promise in pediatric populations.
  • Few IIPT programs cater to the unique needs of young adults (YAs).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the design and implementation of a pilot YA-IIPT program.
  • To assess the outcomes of YA-IIPT on pain, psychological and physical functioning, disability, and quality of life in YAs.

Main Methods:

  • Adapted a pediatric IIPT model for YAs using a biopsychosocial approach.
  • Measured physical functioning, psychological functioning, disability, quality of life, and pain experience.
  • Utilized paired t-tests and repeated measure ANOVAs for data analysis at multiple time points.

Main Results:

  • Significant improvements observed in physical and psychological functioning, disability, quality of life, and pain experience from admission to discharge (P<0.01).
  • Most improvements were sustained at 6-week and 6-month follow-up assessments.

Conclusions:

  • The pilot YA-IIPT program demonstrated clinically and statistically significant improvements in young adults with chronic pain.
  • Outcomes related to functioning, quality of life, and pain experience were largely maintained post-discharge.
  • Further research is warranted to explore long-term outcomes of YA-IIPT.
