Background:

Asian Americans are an underrepresented population in the St. Louis metropolitan region.
Community concerns regarding cancer prevention and care require identification.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify preliminary community concerns for cancer prevention and care among Asian Americans.
To understand perceptions and experiences related to cancer within this demographic.

Main Methods:

Phenomenological theory and expressive writing were employed.
Participants (N=19) with a history of cancer or caregiving roles wrote essays.
Thematic analysis was used to code essays and identify key themes.

Main Results:

Three primary themes emerged: cancer stigma linked to lifestyle beliefs, preference for traditional medicine due to cultural factors, and financial/language barriers to accessing care.
Cancer stigma was prevalent, with a tendency to attribute cancer primarily to lifestyle choices.
Access to care was hindered by cost and a lack of language translation services.

Conclusions:

Identified significant barriers to cancer prevention and care for Asian Americans in St. Louis.
Findings will inform community engagement strategies, including a subsequent photovoice study.
Addressing stigma and improving access are crucial for enhancing cancer care for this population.
